St Joseph’s Primary School 14 Derrycourtney Rd, Caledon

School Ethos

St Joseph’s Primary school is a Catholic maintained school serving the Caledon and Brantry area in the parish of Aghaloo.  We are committed to the aims of Catholic education and strive to provide for the spiritual, emotional and academic needs of our children.

In St. Joseph’s we aim to create a safe, caring and loving community where all members of this community are valued as equals.  All children will be encouraged to fulfil their intellectual, spiritual, physical social, aesthetic and emotional potential. Thus we aim to help our pupils;

to develop as confident, disciplined and enquiring learners, able to make informed choices and decisions.

  • to enjoy reading and to develop a confidence with language which will enable them to communicate effectively with others.
  • to develop the skills and knowledge of mathematics to enable them to cope confidently with everyday situations
  • to know and understand their world through scientific, historical, geographical and religious inquiry and to come to an understanding of their responsibilities to care for the environment
  • to develop practical, creative, artistic and physical skills
  • to develop a strong sense of spirituality and faith
  • to become valued and valuable members of their community.

We are a Catholic School, committed to the Statement of Aims of Catholic Schools and to the promotion of an ethos throughout the school that reflects the Christian teaching and values of the Church. As a Catholic school we value the role the church plays in the whole development of each child and we will continue to maintain strong links through the Sacramental preparation for each child.

We aim to establish a community where all pupils, teachers, parents and support staff enjoy a sense of belonging and have an important part to play in the cultivation of self respect and self worth, so that each child may accept his/her appropriate responsibilities and show respect for others in our school community and beyond in the wider community. We value pupil opinion and encourage children to get involved in decision making. This provides them with the opportunity to see the impact that their decisions have on the environment and on the lives of others.

We aim to present the children with a stimulating and imaginative environment both inside and outside the classroom, so that learning, success and personal satisfaction for themselves are achieved.

We aim for high standards of educational achievement from our children and high standards of professionalism from our staff. We aim to make the learning experience engaging and motivate the children through good planning and delivery.

We will promote strong links with the community through engaging the parents in the children’s learning. We value the contribution parents make to their child’s education. We will try to ensure that parents feel supported in helping their child reach his or her full potential.

We aim to ensure effective communication between children, staff, parents and Governors to provide the best education for each child in our care.
