Hedgerow Heroes Planting
January is the time to start work in the garden before Spring arrives so KS2 pupils recently spent a busy morning planting 150 saplings for a new hedge in St. Joseph's PS.
As winners of the Hedgerow Heroes Competition 2023-24, St. Joseph's hosted Emma from Keep N.I. Beautiful, and Peter from the Mid-Ulster Council. Our visitors offered valuable guidance on where and how to plant the hedge.
The pupils planted a variety of native hedging including blackthorn and whitethorn. They also planted a pear and two crab apple trees. The new hedge will create an extension to our existing woodland and offer a habitat for a range of creatures and birds.
The pupils decided to plant the hedge to form a semi-circle which will become a new outdoor classroom when grown. Partnering with Mother Nature, the pupils have taken action to enhance their environment and fight climate change.
Congratulations to our wonderful KS2 pupils on their responsible investment in all our futures.
